Things That Bring Back Memories “Tesla – Love Song” #MondayMemories 4

Things That Bring Back Memories

For this “Things That Bring Back Memories” post, I am going to pick something pertaining to the topic of “Music“.  There are so many songs that I can remember from years ago, and since music is a huge part of our family, the memories come streaming back when you hear a certain song.

Do you ever have that tune that comes on the radio, and you can just automatically remember where you were, who you were with and what you were doing?  It amazes me, how as I get older, I can’t remember things from last week – but have that certain song come on the radio on a “Flashback” day, and “BOOM”, I am back in the place I was when I heard it.  Don’t know if it’s the side effects of my brain surgery, which they said might affect certain memory, but I’m so glad that I can remember some things of the “good old days.”

So to get on with this “Things That Brings Back Memories” blog post for this week, I’m going to pick Love Song by Tesla, which was released in 1989.  If you don’t know about the song that I’m talking about, here it is:

The title called Love Song was one that some people loved, and then others said it was a way for the rock band to make money with the “sosh” crowd!  I thought it was great.  You got to hear their musical talent and enjoy the song.  It’s one that I remember many guys requesting for their girlfriends back in the day.  Did you ever listen to this song?  What did you think of it?

“Love Song” is a power ballad written by Frank Hannon and Jeff Keith of the rock band Tesla, originally released on their 1989 album The Great Radio Controversy. The song reached number ten on the U.S. charts, becoming the group’s biggest hit to date. It also became a gold record.

On July 7, 1989, the music video was filmed during a concert in the band’s home town of Sacramento at the former Cal Expo amphitheater. The band and Old 93 Rock (a Sacramento radio station at the time), knowing that the music video was to be filmed at the concert, held a contest where the fan who created the best banner that displayed 93 Rock, Tesla, and ‘Love Song’ on it would win backstage passes. Banners can be seen being held up in the audience and background throughout the video.

More Info on the Band:

Tesla is an American heavy metal band formed in Sacramento, California in late 1981 by bassist Brian Wheat and guitarist Frank Hannon as City Kidd.  Lead vocalist Jeff Keith, drummer Troy Luccketta and guitarist Tommy Skeoch joined them by 1984. By 1986, the band had changed from its glam-derived sound to a ‘rootsier’ direction under a new name: “Tesla”. By 1990, the band started showing signs of wear, with the introduction of drummer, Stefano Pasta taking the throne for Luccketta for a brief period until his own departure for personal reasons. In 1996, the band disbanded, with members devoting themselves to solo projects. In 2000, they reformed, but Tommy Skeoch departed the band in 2006 due to substance abuse, and was replaced by Dave Rude. They have sold 14 million albums in the United States.

Some Other Interesting Facts:

    • They are named after scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla. The band tried to raise the profile of Tesla by giving the Smithsonian Institute a bust of the scientist, which they rejected.
    • A Tesla is a unit of magnetic flux. Many of us learn this in Physics class but none of us remembers it.
    • The band broke up in 1995, they got back together in 2000.
    • They formed in Sacramento, California. A disk jockey there helped get them back together to tour after they broke up.
    • Skeoch had drug problems and was the first to leave the band. The other members broke up shortly after.

Music works that way. You remember parts of your childhood and music and who played Dorthy in the Wizard of OZ. Forget the keys or milk on the list.
