[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”#A26313″ class=”” size=”20″]Pacific Book Review calls “What My Dog Taught Me About Jesus”: “A Christian masterpiece with a dog lover’s point of view.” This is a result of seeing God everywhere says author, David Ross Sherman. This book is the story of how God is found in unusual places. The author uses his service animal to demonstrate this, but also speaks to all other parts of the Creation.[/perfectpullquote]

I recently was able to purchase and read the new What My Dog Taught Me About Jesus book by David Sherman. I’ve known David for awhile now, and really couldn’t wait to hear about what Jenny (his dog) had taught him. I’m the lead volunteer for the Red Cross is our County, and David is a leader for the Salvation Army in the White Mountains, so we’ve worked together on many things and I’ve got to enjoy his service dog Jenny many times. That sweet animal always brings a smile to your face and makes you feel that you are loved!

Knowing that he was writing a book about something that makes people kind of smile, I couldn’t wait to read it! Sometimes we learn really important things from people, places and/or things that really don’t make sense at the time. David really had a great way of making it all become clear. Just like our amazing dogs, that follow us everywhere, and make us feel that they are always around…such is the same as the Lord. He is always with us, and as He says in His Word, will never forsake us. Knowing when we toss that bone for our dog to fetch, sometimes God is tossing that opportunity in our life, hoping that we’ll go for it.

In Chapter 15, titled “I’ll Always Be By Your Side,” we hear about the fruit of the spirit – FAITHFULNESS. Having faith and knowing that God will never leave us, nor forsake us. Just like our trusted dogs, they never want to leave, or miss out on a treat or belly rub. The more you look at it, the more it makes sense. Dogs have that unconditional love for their masters, just as our Master does for us. It really makes you want to shake your tail (or smile) knowing that God loves us that much.

Here’s to you Jenny, thank you for helping us see how the Lord works in our lives, even if it’s something that we sometimes miss. Things happening in our home, in our lives, or even at the pet food store can be a way for God to work a miracle, help bless you or someone else, and more importantly bring a smile and help to cherish the life you were given.

About the Author:

dogDavid Sherman is a Pastor, an author and is totally in love with God. Since April of 2000, he has been a pastor for a church, directed social services and worked with those suffering in disasters. He feels that he is called to assist people in their need. Compassion is a prerequisite in working with The Salvation Army, as well as being able to see beyond the present situation and to articulate that vision to those embroiled in either the results of their own decisions, those whose lives have been affected by outside incidents or events and those having their lives turned upside down due to disaster. He loves to be in the midst of a disaster. That will sound strange to those who have never worked in the disaster arena. He finds that during the response and recovery to any disaster, is the best place to really show the love of Christ to those hurting and who may be still reeling from the effects of nature’s fury and provide comfort physically, spiritually, emotionally and sometimes mentally.

Although he has worked and is trained for command positions in Logistics and Operations, and loves working in command and communicating with the various areas of command and control, he has published a book entitled “Learning to Agalliao” which means to “jump for joy”. It teaches someone in the throes of suffering to be able to keep their joy, even in the darkest times. David knows that it can be done, but it is only possible through a relationship with God. You can see more at Agalliao.net His specialties include: teaching, writing, communication, leadership, graphic design, planning, disaster work (ie; feeding ops, survival, shelter management, some ICS positions – including IC, Operations, Logistics, CISM & emotional and spiritual care officer).
