Have Some Fun With a Back to School Cake
I had created a post like this years ago, and figured it was time to update it. This is always something that I love making for the teachers each year and letting them have some extra supplies, and be ready for the school year. All of our amazing school staff are made to spend too much of their own money for things that the school should supply (in my opinion), so being able to help as a parent who cares, means a lot. It doesn’t take much time, isn’t very expensive and can really help out a classroom, or a lot of the staff!
Let’s take some time to let the teachers know how important they are. In our backwards world, where sports people who play a game once in awhile get paid millions….those that teach a future generation struggle. Why don’t we all help to change that? 🙂 I hope you like it!! Have a blessed day, and please be sure to comment on and share this #TBCCrafters craft!!
“Back to School Cake“
Materials/Tools Used:
- (2-3) Styrofoam Wreaths or Discs
- (90-100) #2 Pencils
- Construction/Art Paper
- Lots of Rubber Bands
- Decor, if desired
- Glue Dots/Hot Glue Gun
- & Time!
Instructions:
I started by tracing around one of the wreaths on a piece of thick art paper, to then cut out for a “floor” for the cake.
Then, I glued the Styrofoam wreaths together, with the cut circle between.
Next, I put a large rubber bands around (1) of the Styrofoam pieces. This will be used to hold the pencils to it, so at this point, doesn’t need to look a specific way. Just be sure to use one that isn’t too tight and that might break on you, as you are putting the pencils in. Mine were pretty large and worked well.
Next, start inserting the pencils inside of the rubber bands however you wish. You can have erasers on top, bottom, or even staggered. Completely up to you.
Now, I filled the inside of the “cake” with the rubber bands. (Ignore the different colored pencils, I was going to do it that way, and then changed my mind :p )
Once you have the inside full of rubber bands, you can start on any special things to decorate it with. I decided to use my Cricut to make some cute little signs on sucker sticks and then inserted more pencils to look like candles. 🙂
Now, to cover up the rubber band, I found some bulletin board borders at the dollar store, and glued them around to hide it.
That’s all it took to make the Back to School cake! Now you can take it to Back to School night and bless a teachers’ evening!!
Hope you like it! Please take a minute to leave me a comment and let me know what you would do different, or what you would add, etc. Be sure to tweet, pin, share, etc. – thanks!!

I love how you used the circle styrofoam forms stacked to make the cake. I had always wondered how people make the pencil cakes round like this – thank you for solving that mystery for me. 🙂
I definitely want to try this idea one day, and will be pinning your post to my Back To School board. Thank you for sharing it with us at the #HomeMattersParty

Very cute! I know teachers who spend their own money on supplies for kids who come without them. This would be so appreciated by them!
That’s exactly why I wanted to make it for the teacher! 🙂
